Daybreak is a tool for people in recovery. The community features exist to support that — not to replace therapy, not to provide public discussion, not to gather attention.

Core principles

1. Respect privacy

  • Don't share another user's recovery details outside Daybreak.
  • Don't screenshot accountability partner updates.
  • Treat anything shared in the platform as confidential by default.

2. Be supportive

  • Encourage progress at any scale. A 1-day streak is real.
  • Skip judgment. Everyone's path is different.
  • Celebrate milestones. Be patient with setbacks.

3. Stay safe

  • Never share personal contact information in public features.
  • Report behavior that feels inappropriate or unsafe.
  • If someone you're partnered with is in crisis, encourage them to use crisis resources — call or text 988 (US), text HOME to 741741, or call 911 if there's immediate danger. See Crisis resources for more.

4. Be honest

  • Accurate check-ins help you and your accountability partners.
  • Don't use the platform to monitor or control someone else.
  • Accountability is support, not surveillance.

What's not allowed

  • Harassment, bullying, or threats of any kind.
  • Sharing explicit, violent, or harmful content.
  • Impersonating another person.
  • Promoting substance use or self-harm.
  • Spam, advertising, or solicitation.
  • Circumventing safety features for or against other users.

Accountability partner etiquette

When you're working with an accountability partner — yours or theirs:

  • Check in regularly. Consistency builds trust.
  • Respect boundaries. If someone needs space, give it. Not every check-in is a teaching moment.
  • Lead with encouragement. Constructive feedback has its place, but it's not the default mode.
  • Communicate openly. If the partnership isn't working, say so. Awkward conversation beats slow drift.

Reporting concerns

If you see something that violates these guidelines:

Reports are reviewed within 24 hours

For safety-related reports (immediate harm or threats), response is typically within 1 hour during business hours.

Violations may result in content removal, feature restrictions, or account suspension depending on severity. Repeat or severe violations result in permanent account loss.

For violations that involve immediate risk to a person:

  • In the US: call 911 for immediate physical danger; call or text 988 for mental-health crisis.
  • International: see Crisis resources for country-specific hotlines.

Reporting via Daybreak does not replace contacting emergency services for an active emergency.

Common pitfalls

Treating an accountability partner as a therapist

Partners are peers. They're not trained for crisis response, trauma processing, or clinical judgment. Use professional resources for those needs; use partners for the daily-rhythm support they're designed for.

Hesitating to report because 'it's not that bad'

If something felt wrong enough to consider reporting, report it. Our team reviews each report individually; nothing is punitive without context. Better to surface and have us decide than to leave a real problem in place.

A note on recovery

Recovery is not linear. Bad days don't erase good ones. The community exists to support you through all of it — wins, setbacks, and the long stretches in between.
