Dawn troubleshooting
Fixes for the common Dawn issues — no responses, generic responses, missing history, rate-limit errors.
Quick answer
Dawn issues fall into four buckets. Match your symptom below.
Dawn isn't responding
In order:
- Check your internet. Dawn requires an active connection.
- Refresh the page (or restart the mobile app).
- Check service status at status.daybreakpath.com. AI provider downtime is occasional; it usually resolves within minutes.
- Clear browser cache. Cached auth tokens can sometimes get stale.
- Sign out and back in. Refreshes the session token.
If Dawn still isn't responding after all five, submit a ticket with the time you noticed and your browser/OS.
Responses feel off
Most often this is a context problem, not a Dawn problem.
Add specificity
"I feel bad" produces a generic response. "I had a craving at lunch when my coworker mentioned the bar we used to go to" gives Dawn something to work with.
Start a new conversation
Long single-conversation threads (30+ turns) can drift as the model loses focus on the original topic. Open a new conversation; companion memory carries the important bits forward.
Review companion memory
Wrong memories produce wrong-feeling responses. Settings → Dawn AI → Companion memory lets you read and edit what Dawn thinks it knows about you. Common case: an incorrect memory from early in a conversation is being treated as fact in current ones.
Check your goals
If your active goals are stale or no longer relevant, Dawn keeps referencing them. Update or close them — see Goal setting.
Conversation history is missing
Confirm the account
Open Settings → Profile and confirm the email matches the account you've been using. The most common cause of "missing history" is two accounts (one email + one Google) being treated as one in your head.
Conversation threads vs memory
Companion memory carries forward; previous conversation threads are separate. If you don't see a specific past conversation in Settings → Dawn AI → Conversation history, it might never have been saved (e.g. you closed the tab before sending the first message) or you might have deleted it.
Deleted history is permanent
If you previously deleted a conversation or all conversations, they cannot be restored. We don't keep recoverable backups of deleted user content — that's the privacy commitment.
Rate limit reached
| Plan | Daily message limit |
|---|---|
| Free | 15 |
| Plus | 50 |
| Premium | 150 |
| Pro | 500 |
Limit resets at midnight UTC. Two options:
- Wait for the reset.
- Upgrade at Settings → Billing → Subscription.
If you're on a paid plan and seeing the limit error unexpectedly, submit a ticket — there might be a billing-status sync issue.
Common pitfalls
Treating slow responses as broken
Dawn sometimes takes 5–10 seconds to respond, especially during peak hours. Wait 30 seconds before deciding it's broken.
Re-asking the same question and getting the same response
This is expected — Dawn is consistent. To get a different angle, rephrase the question or ask Dawn explicitly: "Give me a different perspective on this" or "What's the opposing view?"
Common error messages
"Service temporarily unavailable"
The AI provider is having an outage or our service is restarting. Usually clears within minutes. Check status.daybreakpath.com.
"Session expired"
Your auth token timed out. Sign out, sign in, retry.
"Content blocked by safety filter"
The classifier flagged your message as crisis-adjacent. Dawn's response includes crisis resources. This is intentional — see Crisis detection.
Still stuck
Submit a ticket with:
- The error message (if any) or symptom.
- The time it occurred.
- What you've already tried.
- Browser + OS.
Next steps
- Common issues — broader troubleshooting beyond Dawn.
- Companion memory — for response- quality tuning.
